I don't remember it being terrible in terms of reliability, but then Mum had an Allegro, so my standards were probably artificially low.

You could. They were quite a thing once, probably where the driver would be getting in and out in confined spaces frequently.

I remember the mix being about 50/50 for regular and sliding doors when I was a kid. Quite common for campers and milk and veg deliveries.

They were common in NZ back when - much more so than Transits. B ut they ’d have been locally assembled: import controls were tight in the 70s . S ince I don’t remember sliding door ones at all, presumably the NZ operation decided not to make that version.
